Attorney General Eric Holder is perhaps President Barack Obama’s most controversial appointee.
In his early days a colleague praised Holder’s professional abilities. Segue to the present when a leading liberal scholar called him President Barack Obama’s “sin-eater.”
A new book by John Fund and Hans von Spakovsky, Obama’s Enforcer, traces Holder’s journey from a not-very-racialist sort to the man who seems obsessed with race at every turn as AG. Holder once called the U.S. a “nation of cowards” on race matters.
Van Spakovsky said in a recent TV interview Holder is interested in politics, not justice. Even those on the left would have a hard time disproving that notion. During a high profile murder case in Florida, Holder actually set up an email for tips about the case despite the fact it was aggressively prosecuted and no racial component was perceived by many who researched the case objectively.
The AG’s track record on truthfulness and ethics is very troubling, considering the power he wields.
Consider the shakedown Holder levied on Gibson Guitar—forcing a private company to pay thousands directly to a left of center nonprofit group on top of hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines as a tradeoff for a long, expensive court battle the DOJ would have certainly lost. The fact the company operates in a non-forced union state made the legal proceedings even more suspect.
Holder made a false statement to Congress about being involved in prosecuting members of the press for classified information leaks. He said he’d “never been involved” in such a thing.
But the House Judiciary Committee found he had done the opposite—“Holder had specifically approved a search warrant for Fox News reporter James Rosen’s emails.” Worse, Holder had sworn “to a federal court that Mr. Rosen was a co-conspirator in a national security leak investigation.”
That deception came after Congress learned Holder had made false statements about a government gun-running sting popularly called ‘Fast and Furious.’
Holder followed up this behavior by refusing to appoint an independent counsel to investigate IRS targeting of government reform groups. Instead, Holder selected a Justice Dept. lawyer who was a big donor to the campaign of President Barack Obama.
Fund and Spakovsky’s new book also takes a close look at Holder’s wife, and her influence on his politics. Allegations surfaced that Mrs. Holder co-owned a building where a scandalized abortionist operated. The abortionist was not only reprimanded by his state medical board, he was indicted by a grand jury on Medicaid fraud charges.
Holder’s views on abortion are fringe left—no limits or restrictions. Human Events reported in the story about the abortionist:
“In recent months, judges have blocked Holder’s efforts to punish pro-life supporters counseling women outside abortion clinics. In one case, Holder’s Department of Justice agreed to pay Mary ‘Susan’ Pine $120,000 for its filing of an “improper lawsuit” against her, according to a statement by Liberty Counsel, an Orlando, Fla.-based nonprofit legal firm. Pine counseled women on the sidewalk outside a Florida abortion clinic.”
Holder is one of many Obama staffers and/or appointees who served in fellow Democrat Bill Clinton’s administration.
Jonathan Turley, Shapiro Professor of Public Interest Law at George Washington University and a member of USA TODAY’s Board of Contributors—no right winger by a long shot—has called for Holder to be fired. Turley wrote:
“Obama responded to the outcry over the AP and Fox scandals by calling for an investigation by … you guessed it … Eric Holder. He ordered Holder to meet with news media representatives to hear their “concerns” and report back to him. He sent his old sin eater for a confab with the very targets of the abusive surveillance. Such an inquiry offers no reason to trust its conclusions.
The feeble response was the ultimate proof that these are Obama’s sins despite his effort to feign ignorance. It did not matter that Holder is the sin eater who has lost his stomach or that such mortal sins are not so easily digested. Indeed, these sins should be fatal for any attorney general.”
No attorney general in my lifetime has been as deliberately dismissive of the U.S. Constitution as Holder.
In keeping with Obama’s policy, however, Holder, just like others who have deceived Americans about their government’s actions, remains on the job.
Obama’s Enforcer: Eric Holder’s Justice Department is set for a June 10 release.
